Does CBD Oil Help Minimize the Size of Varicose Veins?

People Often Wonder if CBD OIl is a Home Remedy for Varicose Veins

Cannabidiol (CBD oil) is a chemical found in the cannabis plant. However, CBD oil does not have intoxicating effects like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the more well-known chemical from cannabis plants used to produce marijuana.

The claim that CBD oil can cure varicose veins and other common health issues has increased significantly over the past several years. CBD oil manufacturers have added it to topical creams, body sprays, and other commonly used over-the-counter products. They claim CBD reduces inflammation in the body and therefore can reduce the pain and swelling associated with varicose veins. We urge you to evaluate this healing claim with caution.

Unfortunately, CBD Oil Does Not Cure Varicose Veins

As of late 2020, no conclusive studies have proven that CBD oil eliminates symptoms such as burning, itching, swelling, and leg heaviness associated with varicose veins. Some studies do suggest that CBD oil can be helpful in the treatment of restless leg syndrome, a condition sometimes related to varicose veins.

Hemp oil, which contains neither CBD oil nor THC, has demonstrated limited benefit for reducing pain and itching from varicose veins and improving their unsightly appearance. While there is nothing wrong with considering supplemental vein treatments, you should not solely rely on these alternative products. Varicose vein treatment requires proper evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment from a doctor specializing in vein care.

What You Can Do to Get Rid of Varicose Veins

Whether you are seeking relief of varicose vein symptoms or would like vein treatment for cosmetic reasons, Schulman Vein and Laser Center can help with one of four outpatient treatments for varicose veins.

Endo Venous Laser Treatment (EVLT) has replaced earlier procedures such as litigation surgery and vein stripping that could be long and uncomfortable for patients. With laser therapy, you remain awake the entire time under local anesthesia. We take extra caution not to leave scars behind by using fine needles containing laser fibers to deliver medication to your varicose veins. The goal is to close faulty or broken veins that promote improper blood flow between the veins and heart.

Varicose vein micro-surgery, formally known as ambulatory phlebectomy, enables Dr. Schulman to remove varicose veins from your legs. He does this by making tiny incisions on the outer surface of the veins and then using a special phlebectomy devise to locate and remove them. The last step is to close the incision points.

Our vein clinic also offers two types of injections for the treatment of varicose veins. One method, called foam sclerotherapy, relies on a mixture of medications and carbon dioxide to create a foam resembling shaving cream. When inserted into a needle, the foam solution helps to quickly push the medication towards the veins. You can also opt for varicose vein injections without foam. The goal of both injection types is to eliminate or at least greatly reduce varicose vein symptoms.

Can CBD Help Varicose Veins?

If you have varicose veins, you no doubt search for treatments to ease their discomfort. In your research, you’ve probably read about the therapeutic effects of cannabidiol (CBD) and wondered if this substance can diminish the pain and swelling of varicose veins.

In the few scientific studies that have investigated its medicinal uses, CBD has shown promising results in the reduction of chronic pain. However, research into this topic has just begun, and there are not many, if any, studies on CBD and venous insufficiency as of yet. Before you try CBD in either a lotion or oral drop form to treat your varicose veins, here’s what you need to know.

What is CBD and How it Can (Possibly) Help

CBD is an extract of the hemp plant from which cannabis is made. But unlike the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) component of marijuana, CBD does not produce the “high” associated with cannabis.

That’s because CBD and THC affect different receptors within the endocannabinoid system. This system reacts to cannabinoids produced by our bodies, which, in turn, regulate how we feel and experience pain. Much of the scientific research so far has focused on whether the CBD compounds found in marijuana can intensify the effects of cannabinoids, and, therefore, alleviate chronic pain and inflammation.

To date, studies have indicated medical marijuana does in fact reduce chronic pain in people with painful conditions such as arthritis. Moreover, CBD may help people with restless leg syndrome (RLS), a condition that interrupts sleep with uncontrolled leg movements. RLS is often an accompanying symptom of varicose veins. By boosting the body’s dopamine levels, CBD could give RLS and varicose vein patients the good night’s rest they crave.

Hemp oil in another form has been used by varicose vein patients to reduce the discomfort and appearance of varicose veins. Made from hemp seeds, hemp oil does not contain THC or CBD, but does contain omega-3 fatty acids that thin blood. As blood thins as it runs through the veins, the appearance of varicose veins diminishes.

It’s also been reported that hemp oil can stop the itching that varicose veins sometimes cause, as well as make spider veins less noticeable. Similar to other essential oils and lotions, hemp oil is not a cure for varicose veins. For that, you need treatment from a vein specialist.

If you decide to take a CBD supplement for the pain of varicose veins, check with your doctor to make sure the substance won’t interact negatively with medications you may be prescribed for other conditions.

How to Treat Varicose Veins with CBD

Here is yet another medical issue treatable with CBD. Varicose veins are often called spider veins too. Or, sometimes they are treated as two different problems. But, one clear thing, they are not pretty. Especially ladies that would like to wear short skirts, or short pants, dread having varicose veins. It does nothing for the beauty of the leg. There are many ointments and creams on the market, and a woman often uses a camouflage cream to cover the ugliness up. Sometimes, it gets complicated and surgery is needed. Admittingly, varicose veins are quite common. About 1 out of every 4 adults in the US alone, will develop varicose veins.

What are Varicose Veins or Spider Veins?

Varicose veins develop when there are faulty valves in the veins. It causes to let the blood flow in the wrong direction or to pool up. The veins get enlarged and swollen. The color is normally very blue or dark purple. Some conditions provoke varicose veins, like, pregnancy, or overweight people. The large, swollen veins often appear on the legs and feet. Most of the time no treatment is necessary, but if the swelling continues and if it hurts a lot, there are treatments available.

The appearance of the veins is mostly in the legs because as we walk upright, or sometimes stand a lot, the veins in the legs are more under pressure. As mentioned before, varicose veins are really more a cosmetic concern, but sometimes complications can happen. People more prone to varicose veins are those standing up a lot, or having a sedentary lifestyle. Blood circulation is an important thing, but when you sit too much without any real movement, the muscles do not contract sufficiently. This could lead to a valvular overflow. The system gets overloaded and the blood volume is just too much for the valves to handle. That is why some movement is so important.

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

Some symptoms do not cause pain. The veins could be bulgy and dark blue. Sometimes they also appear almost like a twisted cord over the calve. But certain symptoms could be painful, These symptoms are:

Heavy feeling in painful legs

Swollen legs with a throbbing sensation

Muscle cramping with a burning sensation

Itchiness around the veins

Skin discoloring around the affected vein

Spider veins are the same as varicose veins, just smaller and closer to the surface of the skin. They are often red, but sometimes also blue. Spider veins are found on the legs, around the ankles, and sometimes on the face as well.

As you advance in aging, you are more prone to develop varicose veins. The valves are deteriorating and have a harder time to function well. Women are also more likely to have varicose veins. During pregnancy, or if you are overweight, you are prone to develop varicose veins. During pregnancy, it has to do with the increased blood volume to support the growing fetus. When you are overweight, extra pressure is put on the legs. Worst of all, if it is in your family bloodline, chances that you might develop varicose veins are very high.

Complications

Complications are not as common as having varicose veins. These complications are:

Ulcers – sometimes ulcers form on the skin close to the varicose veins. Mostly that happens around the ankles. It usually starts with discoloring of the skin. If you experience ulcers, you need treatment.

Blood clots – when the veins are deeper within the leg swells up and throbs all the time, a blood clot could have formed. When the pain doesn´t go away, it might be wise to check it out.

Bleeding – sometimes the vein bursts and causes bleeding. It might not be a problem, but it is better to check it out.

How can CBD help?

The therapeutic properties of Cannabidiol, or CBD, making it perfect for treating varicose veins. CBD is a safe way to treat medical problems. As the human body has a regulatory system, the endocannabinoid system, it can receive signals from the cannabinoids of the marijuana plant. Together they could influence a broad spectrum of physiological processes. Because CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, it makes it a viable treatment for spider of varicose veins.

In varicose veins, circulation is a problem. CBD also helps with that as it postulates circulation. If the treatment is topical, hemp seed oil is very helpful as it is filled with omega fatty acids and a bunch of other healthy substances. Another way to use CBD is by taking it orally. If hemp seed oil is applied topically, it alleviates pain and itchiness. When the veins are superficial, the hemp seed oil promotes blood circulation and the appearance of the spider veins could change and eventually fade away.

Using CBD full spectrum oil will also treat varicose veins. A good way to take it is by micro-dosing. The health benefits will spread over the entire system. Overall health improvement is bound to happen.
