A quick guide to CBD bath products
CBD has emerged as an effective medical treatment for hundreds of thousands of Canadian patients.
CBD – A Revolutionary Medical Discovery
Without a doubt, CBD is one of the most profound scientific breakthrough discoveries to emerge in the last fifty years. Tracing back to 2001, when medical cannabis became legalized in Canada, CBD has been consistently helping hundreds of thousands of Canadian patients with health issues such as:
- Chronic pain
- Cancer pain
- Chemotherapy-related side effects such as nausea and vomiting
- IBS (irritable bowel syndrome)
- Nerve pain
- Multiple sclerosis symptoms, such as spasticity
- And more
As word of CBD’s effectiveness grows, consumer appetite for more patient-friendly products follows suit.
Consumer-Friendly CBD Products
A prevalent misconception about CBD is that one has to smoke it to consume it. This is not necessarily the case. As medical cannabis becomes a viable treatment for more patients, the cannabis industry has innovated several smoke-free methods of consumption for patients who may not prefer inhalation.
These non-smoking methods include:
- Oils and Tinctures
- Gel Capsules
- Oral Sprays
The Rise of CBD Bath Products
CBD products have rapidly evolved over the years, with CBD bath bombs being the latest consumer-friendly offering. The public reception for CBD bath products has been nothing short of excitement and enthusiasm.
What are Cannabis-Infused Bath Products?
These products range from bath bombs, bath salts and bath oils that are infused with either CBD, THC or both. The application of these products is designed to be as simple and straightforward as possible: simply add products to the bath.
Why are CBD Bath Bombs so popular?
The attraction behind CBD bath bombs lies in combining the calming aromatics of fragrances like lavender, chamomile and eucalyptus with the natural pain-relieving qualities of CBD. The result is a relaxing and therapeutic experience, tailor-made for pain patients, as well as the general population.
Mainstream bath products, such as bath bombs, bath salts and oils, are already an influential and popular mainstay in wellness spaces, so the introduction of CBD is a natural step in the right direction.
The Skin Benefits of CBD
With cannabis topicals arriving at retail markets, patients will have another convenient way of addressing localized pain as well as improving skin conditions, such as psoriasis and dermatitis. In addition to providing relaxation and pain relief, CBD pain products also promote healthy, vibrant-looking skin and could also potentially have anti-ageing effects.
Will Cannabis-Infused Bath Products Produce a High?
The short answer is no. Bath products that contain THC cannot produce psychoactive effects, or colloquially known as a “high.” THC has to penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream to generate any psychoactive effects.
However, this is not the case with CBD. Since the human body is littered with numerous CB2 receptors along the skin, CBD can interact with these receptors and exert its natural pain-relieving and relaxing effects.
“So your skin being the biggest organ involved in your immune response, it contains many CB1 and CB2 receptors. it promotes this very strong affinity towards cannabinoids, and that helps them modulate the immune response – anti-inflammatory is one of the big responses in the skin as a result of CBD.” – Dr. Andrew Kerklann, Founder and President of Kerklann Therpeutics, a company offering CBD-based topical products.
What Can CBD Bath Products Help With?
The therapeutic benefits of a hot bath are well-documented. Adding CBD into the mix is a perfect marriage that promotes cumulative healing and relaxing effects.
Here are some of the health conditions that cannabis-infused bath products are effective at treating:
- Localized pain relief
- Menstrual cramps
- Arthritic joints
- Muscle aches and soreness
- Back pain
How to Infuse Your Bath Experience with CBD
Generally speaking, large quantities of CBD must be used to generate desired relaxing and pain-alleviating effects. To create your own therapeutic bath experience, use your preferred bath product (such as a bath bomb or bath salts) and depending on your needs, apply the following amounts of CBD oil directly into your bath:
Can You Use CBD Oil in Your Bath?
As people hear more anecdotal reports of the benefits of CBD, they want to know more about it. Cannabidiol (CBD) is showing promising benefits for supporting users’ well-being and promoting relief after physical activities.
Current treatments may not be producing the desired results, or the side effects could be too severe to continue. CBD offers an alternative way to support overall balance within the systems of the body.
As we face the current situation with Covid-19, it’s essential to find comfort and ways to help us de-stress. CBD oil is a superb choice to add to your bathwater for overall relief and comfort.
Help with Relaxation
When you lie in a warm bath, a process called vasodilation occurs. This function happens when the blood vessels in the body open wider, blood flows faster, and blood pressure decreases. The resulting decrease in blood pressure is already known to be beneficial for heart and stress relief. Although CBD oils already penetrate the skin quickly, vasodilation allows more rapid access to your system.
CBD oils can both be rubbed into your skin before your bath, or added to the bathwater. It’s already calming and soothing to climb into a warm bath, and so by adding CBD oil to your water, it may be that these effects are enhanced.
Many users report that CBD oils support a sense of relaxation. Body relaxation helps promote a feeling of calm, an excellent combination for de-stressing.
Perhaps you already use a bath bomb, or a blend of essential oils to help with relaxation. CBD bath bombs are another option, but CBD oil is an excellent choice as it can cover your whole body both before and during your bath.
How to Add CBD Oil to Your Bath
Using high-quality CBD oil, add 25-100 mg to your drawn, hot bathwater. Twenty-five milligrams can help support relaxation, while higher doses can aid in overall comfort and relief. Remain in the bath for a minimum of 15 minutes to experience the benefits of the CBD.
Alternatively, you can also use CBD bath salts which are easy to make at home. Simply mix together 3 cups of plain Epsom salts, 100-200 mg of CBD oil, and 10 drops of your favourite essential oil. Mix and allow to dry, and store in an airtight container. Use a heaping cupful in every bath.
How to Make a CBD Oil Bath Bomb
Use your full-spectrum hemp CBD oil to create a bath bomb to enhance your relaxation and wellness during your next bath night. Start with a plastic or metal bath bomb mould, or, if you don’t mind the shape, you can simply form it into a ball and place it into a container with a cover.
- 100-200 mg of CBD oil
- 4 oz baking soda
- 2 oz citric acid
- 2 oz Epsom salt
- 2 oz cornstarch
- 1 tsp. water
- 1 tsp. coconut oil
- 5-10 drops of your favourite essential oil
- 1-2 drops of food colouring (optional)
Whisk all of the dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Whisk until they are fully blended. Melt the coconut oil in the microwave for 30 seconds. Mix the wet ingredients into a smaller bowl. Slowly combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients to prevent foaming, whisking gently until the mixture is moist, but not too wet. If it is too dry, add water 1 teaspoon at a time.
Fill the mould on the top and bottom and press the two halves together. Take the top part of the mould off, and leave the bomb to dry for an hour in the bottom part of the mould. Remove the entire mixture from the mould to dry overnight, and your CBD-infused bath bomb is ready to use.
Add CBD oil to bath water or rub directly into the skin.
How Does CBD Work?
CBD is hemp-derived. Hemp is a close cousin of cannabis and a member of the cannabis sativa plant species. It contains trace amounts of the psychoactive THC, so you cannot get high from full spectrum CBD.
Many researchers believe CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), and in particular, the CB1 and CB2 receptors. There is a high density of these receptors in the skin and part of their job is to promote a healthy balance throughout your body.
As the skin is the largest organ in the body, by adding CBD oil to the bathwater, you are allowing the CBD hemp extract to reach these receptors quickly. You may find CBD helps you to relax, soothes your skin and muscles, and generally contributes to an enhanced feeling of well-being.
If you are looking for a new and novel way to help you unwind after a long day, CBD oil in your bath may be just the solution you are seeking. Canzon offers a wide range of CBD oils that you can add directly to your bath, your bath bomb, or run onto your body as you step into your next bath.

Why CBD Might Be the Key to Your Most Relaxing Bath Ever

She spends her days writing and editing stories about sleep, mental health, fitness, preventive health, nutrition, personal development, relationships, healthy habits, and beyond. She loves demystifying complicated health topics, debunking wellness fads, and sharing practical, science-backed solutions for healthy living.
Is there anything more indulgent than a warm bath? Whether you hit the tub to wash up, unwind mentally, ease stiff muscles, or promote a good night’s sleep, you know the healing power of a good soak. But if you thought taking a bath couldn’t get any more relaxing, think again. A CBD bath might just be the ultimate way to soothe your mind, body, and soul.
If you’ve been skeptical about trying CBD in any form, a soak of aromatic, CBD-infused bath salts could be the perfect way to experience its effects without ingesting it, all while doing something you already enjoy (lounging in the tub).
“Anyone can benefit from a CBD bath,” says Cindy Capobianco, cofounder and chief brand officer of the CBD brand Lord Jones. “If you’ve had a long day, an intense workout, or strenuous travel, it can provide the ultimate restorative reset and promote a calm sense of well-being.” And don’t worry, taking a CBD bath won’t get you high.
What Is CBD?
Quick refresher: “Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a cannabinoid found in both hemp and marijuana that can have potential health benefits,” explains Matthew Mintz, MD, FACP, a board-certified internist practicing in Bethesda, Maryland. “Unlike marijuana—which is federally illegal and only medically legal in certain states—hemp is legal everywhere and has virtually no THC (which is short for tetrahydrocannabinol, a different cannabinoid that can make you high).”
CBD supports the body’s naturally occurring endocannabinoid system and promotes endocannabinoid production. “Hemp-based CBD optimizes the function of a system you may not even know you have called the endocannabinoid system, which modulates the fight or flight response; impacting how we respond to stress, how much cortisol (the stress hormone) we produce, and how quickly we recover,” says Aimée Gould Shunney, ND, an advisor to PlusCBD Oil.
CBD Bath Benefits
So what does this calming, homeostasis-promoting, cannabis-derived plant substance have to do with bath time?
Heat improves CBD’s anti-inflammatory benefits.
“CBD is best used for inflammation, which is really at the root of any problem you have with your skin, whether it’s eczema or pain,” says Claudia Mata, the founder of Vertly, which infuses CBD into its natural, mineral- and botanical-rich bath salts. Dissolving a CBD-infused product, like bath salts or a bath bomb, into hot water and soaking in it expedites the process of CBD absorption into the skin and bloodstream through the pores.
“Heat causes vasodilation of the blood vessels, enhancing absorption of CBD (as well as anything else in your bath),” Shunney explains. “It also helps relax your muscles and open your airways, making it easier to breathe. These heat effects are all synergistic with the relaxing, pain-relieving, and anti-inflammatory effects of CBD.”
CBD can make that relaxing bath more relaxing.
“Taking a bath is already so therapeutic,” says Mata. “Baths deliver so many minerals, promote healing, and are great for soreness after a workout.”
Take all the benefits of a good old-fashioned bath, and CBD subtly enhances them. “Hot water, relaxation, CBD, essential oils—who wouldn’t benefit from that combo?” Shunney asks. “The biggest benefits [of a CBD bath] would be to relax and decompress, to ease musculoskeletal pain and inflammation, and to soothe angry skin conditions.”
CBD absorbs more efficiently through the skin.
Compared to taking a few drops of CBD tincture orally (say, under your tongue), letting it absorb topically tends to have quicker, more direct results.
“As with any nutrient or ingredient applied to the skin, absorption into the bloodstream will be faster than with oral ingestion,” Shunney says. And while a topical CBD balm, oil, or cream is ideal for calming localized inflammation, she suggests that adding CBD to a bath exposes your entire body to it, resulting in more systemic effects.
It’s beneficial in many different ways.
“The reason CBD is miraculous is not because of what it does (it’s not a cure-all), but because it is such a malleable ingredient. It’s a compound that works on so many different systems of your body,” says Mata. “It touches on anxiety, mood, sleep disorders—all these different variants of your life.” Add that to your already-calming bath experience, and you’ll be as relaxed as ever.
It’s a natural, plant-derived ingredient that works with other soothing bath products.
Don’t think of a CBD bath as dunking yourself into a tub of chemicals. CBD works naturally, subtly, and in tandem with a bath product’s various therapeutic ingredients. “Everything we do is about blending CBD and herbs,” Mata says. For instance, Vertly’s CBD-Infused Bath Salts ($24, Bloomingdales.com) includes a pore-opening and detoxifying sulfur, which allows all the product’s other minerals (like Dead Sea salt and magnesium) and herbal extracts (including marjoram, yarrow, rosemary, and CBD) to enter pores quicker and deeper.
Lord Jones High CBD Formula Bath Salts ($50, LordJones.com) balance broad-spectrum, hemp-derived CBD with “pink Himalayan salt, arnica, magnesium-rich Epsom salts, calendula petals, and a unique blend of terpenes and essential oils that support deep body relaxation,” Capobianco says.
What to Look for in a CBD Bath Salt
Experts agree: Anytime you’re shopping for CBD bath products, buy from a reputable brand. “Since CBD is not regulated by the FDA, make sure you get any CBD products from a reputable company that follows good standard growing procedures and whose products are verified by a third-party independent lab,” Dr. Mintz says.
Shunney recommends going with organic products that feature these ingredients and processes:
- Essential oils (rather than synthetic fragrance)
- Non-chemical CO2 extraction processes to remove pesticides, metals, and solvents
- High-quality, full-spectrum hemp oil
- Pharmaceutical-grade Epsom salts
- Hemp-derived CBD (which, by definition, contains less than 0.3 percent THC)
- Certification by U.S. Hemp Authority
Are CBD Bath Products Safe for Everyone?
As with any new product, people with sensitive skin should test their CBD bath product before submerging completely. Shunney suggests that, before exposing your whole body to it, dilute a small amount of product, and then apply it to a small area of skin with a washcloth.
As for how much to use and how long to soak, that’s up to you and the product you’re using. Capobianco says, “Each heaping scoop of Lord Jones High CBD Formula Bath Salts [the recommended serving size] contains approximately 20 milligrams of CBD.” Mata recommends that if you have the luxury of time, a good 15 to 20 minutes in the tub is ideal.
